Picture2Microsoft announced that it had released the newest version of its enterprise project management application to manufacturing.

Project Server 2016 includes:

  • Resource engagements to help project managers and resource managers better coordinate resource allocations on projects;
  • Project managers can set up multiple graphical timelines, each with its own timeframe, to show the overall project and specific segments on the same view;
  • New PowerBI functionality enables users to access server data without going through Excel for more dynamic drill-down reporting; and
  • Heat maps communicate over- and under-allocation of resources and allow the project manager to set thresholds for automatic notification.

Of course, as some bloggers are pointing out, if you use Project Online, the cloud-based edition of Project, you already have access to the new feature set.

To run the RTM release, users need to have SharePoint Server 2016 installed. Once the SharePoint farm is up, users enable Project Server 2016 by running this command in the SharePoint management shell:

Enable-ProjectServerLicense -Key

That deploys a 180-day trial product key (Y2WC2-K7NFX-KWCVC-T4Q8P-4RG9W), which will only be accepted if the farm has never had a Project Server trial key previously. More details are available.

A trial download of the software is available on the Microsoft Site.

The company stated that Project Server 2016 will be generally available in the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center in early May.
