Starting August 26, 2026, Ask Gemini in Google Chat puts a single prompt box inside the place most distributed teams already argue about their projects. Google describes it as “a unified command line for your work,” powered by Workspace Intelligence, and the pitch is aimed at a problem every project manager recognizes: the hours lost reconstructing project state from Gmail, Drive, Calendar, and half a dozen chat threads. It also quietly removes something teams may currently depend on.

What Ask Gemini in Chat actually does

Per Google’s Workspace Updates announcement on August 19, 2026, the feature covers five capabilities:

• Find answers quickly — search across Workspace data such as Gmail, Drive, or Calendar to gather information
• Create content — generate images or draft updates without leaving the conversation
• Stay on top of discussions — catch up on all your conversations in one place
• Manage tasks and events — schedule meetings and manage tasks without breaking flow
• Organize your work — structure conversations into individual sessions you can return to over time

It lives under “Shortcuts” in the Chat left rail and opens with Ctrl+G on Windows and ChromeOS, or Command+G on macOS. Rollout is gradual – up to 15 days for feature visibility – beginning August 26, 2026 for both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains.

The last capability is the one PMs should notice. Persistent sessions mean an AI thread about a specific project can accumulate context rather than resetting every time you ask, which is the difference between a novelty and something you actually use on Monday morning.

The part that breaks: the Gemini side panel in Chat

This is a replacement, not an addition, and the migration is imperfect:

• The Gemini side panel in Chat goes away. Ask Gemini takes over its functions , finding files, capturing action items, summarizing conversations.
• Gems are no longer accessible via the Gemini side panel in Chat. They remain available in the Gemini side panel of other Workspace apps.
• Conversation history does not migrate. Admins can export Gemini conversation history, and users may be able to download their own, but note that in the Data Export tool and Google Takeout this data sits under “Gemini in Workspace,” not “Google Chat.”

If your team built a working habit around a Chat-side-panel Gem , a standing summarizer for a project channel, say – that habit needs rebuilding, and anything worth keeping needs exporting before the rollout reaches you.

Why it matters for project managers

Status chasing is the recurring tax on distributed delivery. Every week you pull the same picture together from the same four places, and the cost is not just the time , it is that the picture is stale by the time you present it. Putting retrieval in the same window where the conversation happens shortens that loop.

There is a subtler benefit too. Asking “what’s the state of the vendor integration?” in Chat and getting an answer sourced from Drive and Gmail is a different activity than asking a person. It shifts a class of low-value interrupt away from your team, which is worth real capacity over a quarter.

But keep the limits honest. An AI summary of a channel is a draft, not a status report. It will reflect what was said, not what is true, and it has no view of the schedule, the risk register, or the conversation that happened on a call. The judgment layer – what matters, what is a risk, what the sponsor needs to hear – is still the job. If anything, faster retrieval raises the value of that judgment, because the mechanical part of your reporting is no longer where you add value. What to do next

• Check your eligibility before promising anything. Availability is Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and Google AI Pro for Education. Other tiers do not get it.
• Confirm the admin switches. It is on by default only if Gemini in Workspace in Chat and Workspace Intelligence for all apps are both enabled, and users must be enrolled in Workspace Smart Features. Any of those off means nothing changes for your team.
• Note the language constraint. The change only affects users whose Google account language is English. Colleagues on other language settings keep the side panel for now, so your team may be split across two experiences.
• Export anything you rely on from the Chat side panel before the rollout reaches your domain, since that history will not carry over.
• Watch the promotional window. Through October 1, 2026, Workspace customers get promotional access to higher usage limits. Limits apply after that date. Do not design a weekly reporting ritual around unlimited usage that will not survive October.
• Decide what stays human. Write down which artifacts an AI draft may produce (channel catch-ups, meeting prep) and which must be authored by a person (steering committee status, risk escalations). Doing this before adoption is much easier than after.
