We have several small projects which, in reality, are part of multiple larger initiatives. Can I include a “child” project as part of multiple larger projects?

To pretend, perhaps I am working for a large car company. One engineering effort is toward a new engine (or wheel or whatever). However that engine will be offered in multiple models, so the engine project is really a child to each of the larger parent projects for each of the models in development.

In case it matters I am using Project Professional desktop.

      Thanks!

Sorry – correct terminology is “sub-project” and “master project”. 🙂

You should only have a Sub Project embedded in a master project once, otherwise, you’re double-counting any changes you make to the sub-plan. You can have a master made up of other master plans which contain sub-projects (for instance a portfolio plan containing a mixture of plans and programmes).
If you have a plan which repeats many times you can copy it, rename and insert the second instance in the master.

      Hi Miles!

Thanks for the note. Just so I understand – it sounds like you are saying that a sub-project should only appear once in a master project. This makes sense.

But can the same sub-project appear in multiple (different) master projects? Or will it cause some kind of conflict (i.e. resources or ???)?

      Thanks!
