Baseline Gantt bars not aligning to recently baselined project

I’ve noticed that when I baseline a project schedule and immediately switch to the Tracking Gantt view, the baseline gantt bars do not align with the then-current start and finish bars.  The key is that I just did the baseline.  What I’ve found is that this occurs when I use the default date format of ‘Mon 10/1/12’.

If I change the date format display to include the hours and minutes, the baseline bars correct themselves (below).  Why is this happening?
